  17.        HACK.BBS and ORDER.FRM (together only) may be distributed on bul-
  18.        letin boards,  or copies given away to potential users.  Under no
  19.        circumstances may these files be sold or rented without the writ-
  20.        ten permission of the author. All rights not expressly granted in
  21.        this document are reserved to Computer SoftShop.

  23.     o  The Computer SoftShop Hack List  has no relation to  The Hack Re-
  24.        port distributed by another group of file watchers. All filenames
  25.        in the Hack List were independently screened by Computer SoftShop
  26.        and a few other individuals.  If a filename has not been verified
  27.        by Computer SoftShop, the entry under "Reason For Illegal Distri-
  28.        bution" will say "Unverified."  Many of the filenames in The Hack
  29.        List have never been listed in The Hack Report.

  31.     o  The Computer  SoftShop  Hack List is  not meant to be  a complete
  32.        compilation of all the illegal files being distributed. This list
  33.        is simply a report of those files that we've found to be illegal-
  34.        ly distributed  between 1990 and the present.  Please use at your
  35.        own risk.  We cannot be responsible for mistakes or  omissions in
  36.        the  file list.  All file names  are listed as  we found  them on
  37.        bulletin boards.  Filename extensions are omitted since they vary
  38.        from  board to board.  Normal extensions  include ARC,  ARJ, COM,
  39.        EXE, and ZIP. The list currently contains over 200 filenames.

  41.     o  The Hack List will also give you  valuable information  about the
  42.        Federal Copyright Law, and how it affects you as a bulletin board
  43.        operator.  With this information,  you'll be able to spot many of
  44.        the illegal  commercial,  hacked,  and  cracked files,  and  tell
  45.        whether you can legally distribute many of the files you may have
  46.        on your board,  or ready to put on your board.  It even gives you
  47.        definitions for these terms.

  49.     o  Compare this list to any list of files you may have.  If you find
  50.        files of your own  that match those in this list,  you may have a
  51.        a file  (or archive)  that cannot be  distributed. If you do find
  52.        one of these  filenames though,  don't automatically  assume that
  53.        it's illegal (unless you don't have the time to check it).  A few
  54.        files with names listed  here may be legal to  distribute because
  55.        some legitimate files may use the same filename on the list.

  57.     o  The Hack List will  give you several clues  that will help you to
  58.        spot illegal files.  Some have to do  with filenames or descript-
  59.        ions, and others with groups  that put out hacked or cracked com-
  60.        mercial files.

  62.     o  The Hack List will give you all  of the restrictions for bulletin
  63.        boards that we're aware of, on the distribution of Shareware pro-
  64.        grams.  Since we distribute Shareware commercially, we'll usually
  65.        know about  these to  some extent.  Most Shareware  authors don't
  66.        have any  conditions for their  program distribution  by bulletin
  67.        boards, but some do.

  69.     o  The Hack List will  tell you which illegal  files have been found
  70.        on some of the Shareware CD-ROMs.

  72.     o  The following is a  sample of  the licensed  Hack List.  The file
  73.        HACK2.TXT gives you the filename, the reason the file was illegal
  74.        to distribute, and if it was commercial, the name of the program.
  75.        Also included in this file are  several CD-ROM disks that contain
  76.        some illegal files (filenames aren't shown here).  The other file
  77.        list, HACK3.TXT, contains just the filenames. This is the one you
  78.        can use to compare your files against.

  100.        a copy of the file ORDER.FRM that's included with this file. Free
  101.        boards can  license The Hack List  for half the price  of the pay
  102.        boards (currently $15). A license will get you the complete list-
  103.        ing of over  210 illegal filenames,  along with all the other in-
  104.        formation listed above.
